Mandarin Oriental Hotel

After nearly 145 years in existence, some freshening up might be considered necessary. The Mandarin Oriental Bangkok went through an extensive renovation including all the rooms and suites in the hotel's River Wing, along with the lobby, swimming pools and three restaurants. Preciosa Lighting contributed statement lighting to the hotel lobby and the Oriental Suite.

We had the privilege of once again working with Design Wilkes on this wonderful property. In the lobby, the design team was inspired in part by the space’s existing four solid teak bells. Their request to us was to replicate them in crystal. Preciosa designer Michaela Venclová created a lightweight contemporary crystal bell using 2460 pieces of hand-blown Bohemian crystals in each bell. We created four of these bells, each weighing 150 kilograms. These now hang alongside the original teak bells.

In the Oriental Suite, we were asked to design chandeliers highlighted by trimmings. Three chandeliers were created combining a gold-plated finish with a variety of hanging glass prisms and rods.

Interestingly, it was this hotel, then called The Oriental, that forms the second part of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s famous name. The first comes from the Group’s first property, The Mandarin, located in Hong Kong, which was opened in 1963.
