Preciosa Lighting and Studio MUT Collaborate for Wallpaper* Handmade

At Salone del Mobile, Preciosa Lighting debuted a stunning new installation, Breath of Light. But that wasn’t the only thing we created for Milan Design Week. We also contributed to the Wallpaper* Handmade exhibition working together with Spanish Studio MUT.

The Wallpaper* Handmade exhibition “Wellness & Wonder” is a design spa for self-renewal and a sanctuary of contemporary craft; it’s an invigorating collection of accessories focused on lifestyle improvement. Preciosa worked with Studio MUT on an enticing table lamp which is a sculptural interpretation of chromotherapy, an ancient belief in the healing powers of colour and light. The lamp, called Chromo, is designed using shapes that can be combined in different ways depending on the users’ need for colour and light.

We spoke with MUT founder and designer Alberto Sánchez about Chromo and how it came to be. But first, an introduction to chromotherapy or color therapy. It’s an alternative and ancient healing method which combines the healing power of light with the basic colours of red, blue, green, and yellow. According to Mr. Sánchez, the idea was a nice complement to the Wallpaper theme.

“Chromotherapy is a way to bring the body and being back into balance, which is basically the essence of all types of wellness activities,” he said. “We found chromotherapy a very interesting topic since it is a play with the natural effects of color and light and it fits perfectly in the category of wellness.”

The lamp is simply made from metal and glass. Four different lamps have been produced in different sizes and colours so individual users can adapt it to their needs. For Mr. Sánchez, designing this lamp was a new challenge for the team.

“For us this collaboration was very interesting since it is not only our first time designing a lamp but also working with glass,” he said. “We are very glad that we had Preciosa as a partner who helped us to understand and guide us through the possibilities of this new material.”

The end result is one of colour and light, which should be a healing balm to anyone who sits near its glow. And for Mr. Sánchez, a new design inspiration.

“The exploration of this new material and product category definitely leaves us with the desire to explore this field more.”
