Canopy of Light wins Lighting Project of the Year
The Design Middle East Awards celebrates the creative best and foremost from the region’s design industry. The awards honour the best of designers, architects, projects, design, and architectural companies. The winners were announced at a ceremony at the Sofitel The Palm, Dubai on October 23, 2019. Preciosa was also shortlisted for Specialized Manufacturer of the Year and another project, Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort was also in the Lighting Project of the Year category.
The dynamic installation in the lobby of the Mandarin Oriental Jumeria, Dubai features 14 trees in three sizes, made from hundreds of hand-blown Bohemian crystal leaves with a champagne matte brass finish. What makes the installation unique on the hospitality market is that the lights in the trees are specially programmed to produce different effects.
“Our trees poetically unite our location in terms of geography and culture,” said Sirajul Fahmi, Design Director at DESIGNWILKES. “In our planning of the lobby we wanted to unite the front of the hotel to the beach side, so the idea of an Islamic-based garden stretching through the lobby was then accentuated with our Canopy of Light.”
The winners are decided by a panel of judges, consisting of respected members of the region's design industry, from architects to academics.
“The region offers numerous opportunities for design companies to collaborate closely with their clients to create cutting-edge products,” said Martin Fryzelka, Managing Director for Preciosa Gulf. “Creativity, inventiveness and good design are important values for local projects and we are pleased to work with some of the industry’s best developers, architects and interior designers to bring their lighting visions to life.”
